Bellevue City Council Advances Affordable Housing Strategy

The Bellevue City Council has taken a significant step forward in addressing the city’s housing challenges by advancing an updated Affordable Housing Strategy (AHS) for 2026-2032. This initiative aims to produce and preserve over 5,700 affordable housing units for residents earning between 0 and 80% of the area median income (AMI) over the next decade.

The updated AHS builds upon the successful 2017 strategy and focuses on five core pillars: Affordable Housing, Housing Equity, Housing for Unique Needs, Housing Stability, and Housing Supply & Diversity. These pillars encompass 25 action areas designed to tackle various dimensions of the affordable housing crisis, emphasizing solutions that cater to the needs of Bellevue’s growing workforce and residents.

A notable aspect of the updated strategy is its emphasis on funding mechanisms. The AHS identifies affordable housing revenue as a critical tool for achieving Bellevue’s housing goals. While regulatory reforms and programmatic changes are essential, they are deemed insufficient without dedicated funding to support the production and preservation of affordable housing, particularly for households earning between 0 and 50% of AMI.

The City Council’s commitment to this updated strategy reflects Bellevue’s dedication to creating a community where individuals of all income levels can live, work, and thrive. The council has directed staff to bring back the strategy as an ordinance on the consent calendar at a future meeting, signaling a proactive approach to addressing housing affordability in the city.
