Bellevue City Council Advances Affordable Housing Strategy

Bellevue City Council Advances Affordable Housing Strategy

The Bellevue City Council has taken a significant step forward in addressing the city’s housing needs by advancing an updated Affordable Housing Strategy (AHS) for 2026-2032. This initiative aims to produce and preserve over 5,700 affordable housing units for residents earning between 0 and 80% of the area median income (AMI) over the next decade.

The updated AHS builds upon the successful 2017 strategy and focuses on five core pillars: Affordable Housing, Housing Equity, Housing for Unique Needs, Housing Stability, and Housing Supply & Diversity. These pillars encompass 25 action areas designed to tackle various aspects of the affordable housing crisis, ensuring a comprehensive approach to housing affordability in Bellevue.

A notable aspect of the updated strategy is the emphasis on securing dedicated revenue sources to fund affordable housing initiatives. Recognizing that regulatory reforms alone are insufficient, the AHS identifies affordable housing revenue as a critical tool to advance Bellevue’s goals. Actions to reduce costs and timelines for the production and preservation of affordable housing are also included to maximize the impact of these funds.

The City Council’s commitment to this updated strategy reflects Bellevue’s dedication to creating a community where individuals and families of all income levels can live, work, and thrive. The council has directed staff to bring back the strategy as an ordinance on the consent calendar at a future meeting, signaling a proactive approach to implementing these plans.
