The Bellevue City Council has recently undertaken several initiatives aimed at enhancing community safety and addressing pressing human services needs.
Speed Limit Reductions to Improve Road Safety
In response to a concerning rise in fatal and serious injury crashes, the council approved the ‘Safe Speeds Bellevue’ program. This initiative will lower speed limits on numerous arterial roads, with many streets reducing from 30 to 25 mph. Notably, corridors like Bel-Red Road and NE 20th Street will see limits drop from 35 to 25 mph. The program aims to decrease high-end speeding and reduce crash severity, with new speed limit signs expected to be installed in phases starting early next year.
Addressing Human Services Needs
The council received a report on the 2025 Human Services Needs Update, highlighting significant gaps in services for Bellevue’s vulnerable residents. In response, the council is considering recommendations on allocating approximately $6.5 million per year for human services funding in the 2027-2028 period. This funding will support various programs, including food assistance, financial support, and legal aid for immigrants and refugees.
Housing Policy Updates
To comply with new state laws and address the housing shortage, the council approved updates to housing rules, allowing ‘middle housing’ types such as duplexes and cottage courts in neighborhoods previously restricted to single-family homes. This change aims to increase housing options and affordability within the city.
These measures reflect Bellevue’s commitment to enhancing safety, supporting vulnerable populations, and promoting sustainable growth within the community.
