Bellevue is taking significant steps to address the pressing need for affordable housing within our community. In February 2026, the City Council approved a substantial funding allocation aimed at accelerating affordable housing development.
Historic Investment in Affordable Housing
The council directed staff to prepare legislation approving up to $25.7 million from the Housing Stability Program and up to $11.3 million from the city’s Affordable Housing Fund. These funds are designated to support four projects that will result in 271 new affordable housing units in Bellevue. Additionally, the council approved $1.3 million from the ARCH Housing Trust Fund to contribute to these new units, as well as another 234 units throughout the Eastside. This combined allocation represents the largest single funding round in the city’s history, underscoring Bellevue’s commitment to expanding affordable housing options.
Strategic Planning and Community Engagement
Beyond financial investments, Bellevue is actively engaging in strategic planning to address housing needs. The city is considering updates to zoning and land use codes to facilitate mixed-use developments, which can provide diverse housing options and contribute to the vibrancy of our neighborhoods. Community input is a vital component of this process, ensuring that developments align with the needs and preferences of Bellevue residents.
Addressing Homelessness
Recognizing the interconnectedness of housing affordability and homelessness, Bellevue is implementing comprehensive strategies to support individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The city provides access to shelter, housing, and services aimed at promoting housing stability. Efforts include fair enforcement of city codes to ensure the safety and well-being of all community members, as well as support for regional initiatives to prevent and address homelessness.
Looking Ahead
Bellevue’s proactive approach to affordable housing reflects a broader commitment to fostering an inclusive and livable community. By combining substantial financial investments with strategic planning and community engagement, the city aims to meet the diverse housing needs of its residents. Ongoing efforts will focus on implementing these initiatives effectively and exploring additional opportunities to enhance housing affordability in Bellevue.
