The Bellevue City Council has recently enacted several measures aimed at enhancing community safety and addressing housing needs.
Speed Limit Reductions for Safer Streets
In response to a rise in serious traffic incidents, the council approved the ‘Safe Speeds Bellevue’ program. This initiative will lower speed limits on numerous arterial roads, with many reducing from 30 mph to 25 mph. Notably, corridors like Bel-Red Road and NE 20th Street will see limits drop from 35 mph to 25 mph. These changes aim to decrease high-end speeding and reduce the severity of accidents. Implementation is set to begin early next year, starting with the downtown core.
Expanding Housing Opportunities
To address the city’s housing shortage, the council has updated zoning regulations to allow ‘middle housing’—such as duplexes, cottage courts, and small apartment buildings—in areas previously restricted to single-family homes. This move aligns with state mandates and seeks to provide more diverse housing options for Bellevue residents.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The council continues to engage with the community on these initiatives, emphasizing the importance of public input in shaping Bellevue’s future. Residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming meetings and provide feedback on these and other city projects.
