Bellevue is actively implementing strategies to tackle homelessness and enhance housing affordability for its residents.
Addressing Homelessness
The City of Bellevue recognizes that a lack of affordable housing is a primary cause of homelessness. To combat this, the city provides access to shelter, housing, and supportive services aimed at promoting housing stability. Additionally, Bellevue enforces city codes to ensure the safety and well-being of all community members and supports regional efforts to make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring.
Community Support Initiatives
In response to increasing community needs, the Bellevue City Council allocated $600,000 from its contingency fund to support organizations providing immigrant and refugee legal assistance, as well as urgent food and financial support. This funding is divided equally among these critical services, supplementing the $235,000 previously approved for immediate food assistance.
Housing Affordability Concerns
Housing affordability remains a significant concern for Bellevue residents. A survey conducted by the Bellevue Housing Research Coalition revealed that 68% of respondents believe the current housing market does not meet the community’s needs. Furthermore, 46% reported being personally affected by housing affordability issues, and 51% know someone who works in Bellevue but cannot afford to live there.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The city continues to engage with residents to address these challenges. The 2025 Human Services Needs Update identified substantial gaps across the human services continuum in Bellevue, leading to discussions on how to allocate approximately $6.5 million per year for human services in the 2027-2028 funding cycle.
By implementing these initiatives and fostering community engagement, Bellevue aims to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all its residents.
