Bellevue is experiencing a period of dynamic transformation, marked by leadership changes, urban development projects, and initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety and community well-being.
New Leadership at City Hall
In January 2026, the Bellevue City Council elected Mo Malakoutian as the city’s new mayor, with Dave Hamilton serving as deputy mayor for the 2026–2027 term. Mayor Malakoutian, who began his council tenure in 2024, has prioritized affordable housing, public safety, transportation, sustainability, and equity.
Advancements in Affordable Housing
Addressing the pressing need for affordable housing, the City Council advanced an updated Affordable Housing Strategy (AHS) for 2026–2032. This plan aims to produce and preserve over 5,700 affordable units for residents earning between 0% and 80% of the area median income over the next decade. The strategy emphasizes diverse solutions, including increased partnerships and support for housing stability.
Urban Development and Infrastructure
The Washington Square project in downtown Bellevue is progressing with a new Master Development Plan. The revised plan includes a 12-story office building and a 27-story residential tower, replacing the previously approved hotel and office structures. This development is set to enhance the city’s skyline and provide additional commercial and residential spaces.
Additionally, the city has approved the construction of Eastgate Commons Park at 14700 SE 39th St. Funded by the 2022 Parks and Open Space Levy, the park will feature open lawns, play areas, and community spaces, with construction expected to commence in 2028.
Public Safety Initiatives
In response to community concerns about reckless driving and street racing, Bellevue has joined forces with neighboring cities to form the Eastside Safe Streets Task Force. This regional partnership aims to reduce incidents of reckless driving and enhance road safety through coordinated enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
Community Engagement and Feedback
The city is actively seeking input from residents and business owners on various initiatives. Business operators are invited to provide feedback on proposed updates to the city’s square footage business tax and licensing regulations. Additionally, community members have multiple opportunities to participate in shaping the 2027–2028 budget and transportation investments, ensuring that the city’s growth aligns with the needs and priorities of its residents.
As Bellevue continues to evolve, these developments reflect a concerted effort to balance growth with community well-being, ensuring that the city remains a vibrant and inclusive place for all.
