Bellevue’s Commitment to Affordable Housing: A Community Update

Bellevue’s Commitment to Affordable Housing: A Community Update

Bellevue continues to make significant strides in addressing housing affordability, a pressing concern for many residents. In a recent move, the City Council approved a substantial funding allocation to support the development of new affordable housing units.

Major Investment in Affordable Housing

In February 2026, the Bellevue City Council directed staff to prepare legislation approving up to $25.7 million from the Housing Stability Program and up to $11.3 million from the city’s Affordable Housing Fund. This funding is earmarked to support four projects that will result in 271 new affordable housing units within the city. Additionally, the council approved $1.3 million from the ARCH Housing Trust Fund to contribute to these new units, as well as another 234 units throughout the Eastside. This combined allocation represents the largest single funding round in Bellevue’s history, underscoring the city’s commitment to accelerating affordable housing projects.

Updated Affordable Housing Strategy

Building upon the success of its 2017 Affordable Housing Strategy, the city has advanced an updated plan for 2026-2032. This strategy aims to produce and preserve over 5,700 affordable units for households earning between 0 and 80% of the area median income over the next decade. The plan is structured around five core pillars: Affordable Housing, Housing Equity, Housing for Unique Needs, Housing Stability, and Housing Supply & Diversity. These pillars reflect a comprehensive approach to tackling the multifaceted challenges of housing affordability.

Community Perspectives

While the city’s efforts have been substantial, community feedback highlights ongoing concerns. A recent survey revealed that 74% of Bellevue voters are worried about their personal financial situations, indicating that affordability remains a significant issue. Additionally, trust in the city’s fiscal management has seen a decline, with only 53% of residents believing that tax dollars are spent responsibly.

Looking Ahead

Bellevue’s proactive measures demonstrate a strong commitment to creating a community where residents of all income levels can thrive. However, the city acknowledges that continued collaboration with community members, stakeholders, and regional partners is essential to effectively address the complex issue of housing affordability. Ongoing engagement and transparent communication will be key to ensuring that Bellevue remains a vibrant and inclusive place for all.
