Art, Music, and Public Art in Bellevue: Portraits of Creativity

By Isabella Gonzalez

A Tapestry of Public Art Across the City

Bellevue’s walls, plazas, streets, and light-posts are alive with art. The City’s Arts & Culture program oversees more than 140 fixed and portable public artworks, including permanent sculptures and temporary murals or utility box wraps, infusing everyday sites with creativity and local stories. These artworks aim to represent Bellevue’s diversity, nature, and evolving identity. Artists, both established and emerging, find opportunities here to contribute work that becomes part of public life.

One recent project, called “River,” by Anna Mlasowsky, exemplifies how public art intersects with community. Installed in Crossroads Park, this trio of installations uses steel and dichroic glass to shift colors with changing light and perspective. It’s the first completed work through the Emerging Artists Public Art Program, which pairs newer artists with support and mentorship.

Festivals, Fairs & Cultural Gatherings

Bellevue hosts some landmark arts gatherings that draw in large crowds and spotlight local and regional talent. The Bellevue Arts Fair Weekend, co-produced by the Bellevue Arts Museum and the Downtown Association, stretches over three days each summer featuring hundreds of artists, live music, dance, food trucks, and interactive art all around Downtown. It’s one of the largest outdoor art gallery events in the Northwest.

Another approachable way to experience art is the Downtown Bellevue Art Walk, a self-guided tour that lets residents explore more than 120 artworks around the city center. ArtMaps (available at City Hall and Meydenbauer Center) guide these walks and make discovering hidden or indoor pieces more accessible.

Music, Workshops & Artist Engagement

Music pulses through Bellevue via series and concerts—one example being the Live at Lunch schedule of free performances Downtown, and an upcoming Jazz & Blues Music Series showcasing both regional and national artists. These programs bring people together through shared experience and performance.

For artists and curious creatives, there are regular calls for portable artwork procurement, artist grants, and inclusion in regional artist rosters. Residents can also participate in workshops—ceramics, printmaking, dance—and engage in community arts programs supported by the city and local institutions.

Why It Matters for Bellevue

This active arts ecosystem adds color to public life and shapes Bellevue’s identity. It emphasizes access—public art in shared spaces, free performances, visual art everywhere—and offers pathways for community participation. Whether you’re walking downtown, enjoying a concert, or creating artwork yourself, there’s a place in Bellevue’s cultural landscape for you.
