Guide to Bellevue’s Best Parks, Beaches, and Outdoor Picks

Hi neighbors — Lucas Hernandez here. If you’re looking for fresh ideas to enjoy Bellevue’s outdoors (without touring the same few spots), here are some of my go-to parks, beach escapes, and all-weather gems to enjoy any weekend.

Downtown & Waterfront Favorites

Bellevue Downtown Park is unavoidable for a reason: it’s 21 acres of green in the glass-and-steel core, complete with a half-mile promenade around a water canal, stepping waterfall, and Inspiration Playground. Great for evening walks, people-watching, or bringing kids to run off steam. Free access & easy parking off 100th NE.

Meydenbauer Bay Park gives you lake access just minutes from downtown. You’ll find a protected swim area, a floating pier, kayak rentals, and perfect spots for waterfront sunsets. On warmer days, this is my go-to for cooling off and enjoying the water.

Natural & Quiet Escapes

Mercer Slough Nature Park is a wetland gem tucked south of downtown. Boardwalk trails, canoe rentals, and the Environmental Education Center make this a peaceful, wildlife-rich spot. Especially good when you want quiet without a long drive.

Bellevue Botanical Garden spans 53 acres of display gardens, woodland, and carefully cultivated landscapes. It’s free most days of the year and perfect for a slow walk or a picnic under trees. Also notable: Garden d’Lights in winter draws folks from all over.

Kelsey Creek Farm & Park is a longtime favorite, especially when you want to feel a little rural without leaving the city. There’s an active farm, forested trails, and creeks—ideal for families and dogs. Early mornings often feel like you’ve stumbled into another world.

Wilburton Hill Park is a quieter hilltop tucked next to the Botanical Garden. If you want views, shade, and space to breathe, this place delivers. Some of the trails are steeper or gravel-covered, so come ready.

Beach Days & Lakeside Spots

Newcastle Beach Park is excellent when you want full lake vibes: sandy shore, swim docks, picnic areas, and nearby nature trails. Great for full-day outings especially with family or friends.

Chism Beach Park is smaller but beautifully secluded. Rocky shoreline, a dock for jumping in when conditions allow, picnic tables under trees… it’s ideal for smaller group hangs or catching sunset after a lazy afternoon.

All-Weather & Weekly Rhythms

When it rains (because it will), Bellevue still delivers. Grab a steamy bowl at a ramen shop, explore indoor spots like the KidsQuest Children’s Museum, or join one of the many art or community-center offerings the city frequently updates.

Also: watch the calendar. Bellevue hosts seasonal fairs, markets, live performances, and pop-ups spread throughout downtown and neighborhood parks. Even without something major on the books, just taking a walk in Downtown Park or paddling at the bay often leads to meeting neighbors and catching local flavor.

My Suggested Weekend Route

If you have a free Saturday, here’s one way to stack up some favorites: Start the morning with coffee in Old Bellevue, stroll the promenade at Downtown Park, then head into the Botanical Garden for lunch or snacks. In the afternoon, paddle at Meydenbauer Bay, and finish with dinner near the waterfront or in Bel-Red with views of the skyline. Sunday can be quieter—maybe a hike in Wilburton, a picnic at Chism Beach or Wilburton Hill, or something artsy indoors.

Enjoy! Bellevue has more green, water, and hidden character than people sometimes realize.
