The Bellevue City Council has recently approved several initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety and addressing community needs.
Reduced Speed Limits for Safer Streets
In response to an increase in traffic-related incidents, the council has enacted the ‘Safe Speeds Bellevue’ program. This initiative involves reducing speed limits on numerous arterial roads, with many streets seeing limits lowered from 30 to 25 mph. Notably, corridors such as Bel-Red Road and NE 20th Street will experience a reduction from 35 to 25 mph. The goal is to mitigate high-end speeding and decrease the severity of collisions.
Addressing Human Services Needs
The council has also reviewed the 2025 Human Services Needs Update, which highlights significant gaps in services for Bellevue’s vulnerable residents. To address these issues, approximately $6.5 million per year will be allocated across various human services programs, including the Human Services Fund, Housing Stability Program, and Community Development Block Grant program. This funding aims to support organizations providing essential services such as food assistance, financial support, and legal aid for immigrants and refugees.
Implementation of Paid Street Parking
To better manage parking in the city’s densest neighborhoods, including Downtown, Wilburton, BelRed, and the Spring District, the council has approved a ‘curb pricing program.’ This program introduces paid street parking with dynamic, demand-based pricing ranging from $1 to $8 per hour. The objective is to maintain an on-street occupancy rate of 80%, ensuring availability and reducing congestion.
These initiatives reflect Bellevue’s commitment to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all residents.
