The Bellevue City Council has recently approved significant measures aimed at enhancing community safety and promoting environmental sustainability.
Speed Limit Reductions for Safer Streets
In response to an increase in fatal and serious injury crashes, the council has enacted the ‘Safe Speeds Bellevue’ program. This initiative involves reducing speed limits across 84% of the city’s arterial road network. Notably, corridors such as Bel-Red Road and NE 20th Street will see speed limits drop from 35 mph to 25 mph. The primary goal is to curb high-end speeding and reduce the severity of collisions, thereby improving overall road safety.
Adoption of the 2026-2030 Sustainable Bellevue Plan
Demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship, the council has unanimously adopted the 2026-2030 Sustainable Bellevue Plan. This comprehensive strategy focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing climate resilience. Key actions include expanding the Energy Smart Eastside program, promoting building decarbonization, and further electrifying the city’s vehicle fleet. The plan is organized around five focus areas: climate change, energy and buildings, mobility and land use, waste, and natural systems, all aimed at achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
These initiatives reflect Bellevue’s proactive approach to fostering a safer and more sustainable community for all residents.
