In a decisive move to enhance public safety, the Bellevue City Council has approved a comprehensive reduction of speed limits across the city’s arterial road network. This initiative, known as the ‘Safe Speeds Bellevue’ program, aims to address the recent uptick in fatal and serious injury crashes by lowering posted speed limits on major thoroughfares.
Under the new regulations, approximately 84% of Bellevue’s streets with existing speed limits of 30 mph or higher will see reductions. Notably, corridors identified as part of the city’s ‘high-injury network,’ such as Bel-Red Road and NE 20th Street, will experience a decrease from 35 mph to 25 mph. These adjustments are intended to curb high-end speeding and mitigate the severity of collisions.
The council’s decision reflects a growing commitment to proactive measures that prioritize the safety of all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. By implementing these changes, Bellevue joins a broader movement among cities nationwide to create safer, more livable urban environments through thoughtful traffic management strategies.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about these changes and to adjust their driving habits accordingly to ensure a smooth transition and to support the overarching goal of reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities in the community.
