In a decisive move to bolster road safety, the Bellevue City Council has approved the ‘Safe Speeds Bellevue’ program, which entails reducing speed limits across a significant portion of the city’s arterial road network. This initiative comes in response to a concerning rise in fatal and serious injury crashes on Bellevue’s streets.
Under the new program, 84% of streets in Bellevue with posted speed limits of 30 mph or higher will see reductions, with most decreasing from 30 to 25 mph. Notably, corridors identified on Bellevue’s ‘high-injury network,’ such as Bel-Red Road and NE 20th Street, will experience a reduction from 35 to 25 mph.
The primary objective of these adjustments is to curb high-end speeding and diminish the severity of collisions. By lowering speed limits, the city aims to create a safer environment for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about these changes and adjust their driving habits accordingly to contribute to the overall safety and well-being of the Bellevue community.
