In a significant move to manage urban growth and alleviate parking congestion, the Bellevue City Council has approved the implementation of a paid street parking program in the city’s densest neighborhoods, including Downtown, Wilburton, BelRed, and the Spring District.
The new ‘curb pricing program’ will replace the longstanding policy of free street parking. The city plans to adopt a dynamic, demand-based pricing model, with hourly rates ranging from $1 to $8. This approach aims to maintain an on-street occupancy rate of 80%, ensuring that approximately 1–2 parking spaces per city block remain available at any given time.
City officials have observed significant traffic impacts due to limited parking availability in popular areas, particularly during evening hours. By introducing paid parking, Bellevue seeks to improve traffic flow, encourage the use of alternative transportation options, and support the city’s ongoing urban development initiatives.
The Bellevue Transportation Department is tasked with establishing and managing the program, drawing inspiration from similar systems in neighboring cities. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed about the rollout of the new parking regulations and to plan accordingly when traveling to affected areas.
