Bellevue’s Commitment to Affordable Housing: A Community Update

Bellevue’s Commitment to Affordable Housing: A Community Update

Bellevue is taking significant steps to address the pressing need for affordable housing within the community. The City Council has recently approved substantial funding allocations and policy changes aimed at increasing the availability of affordable housing units.

Historic Funding Allocation

In a landmark decision, the City Council directed staff to prepare legislation approving up to $25.7 million from the Housing Stability Program and up to $11.3 million from the city’s Affordable Housing Fund. These funds are designated to support four projects that will result in 271 new affordable housing units in Bellevue. Additionally, the council approved $1.3 million from the ARCH Housing Trust Fund to contribute to these new units, as well as another 234 units throughout the Eastside. This combined allocation represents the largest single funding round in the city’s history, accelerating affordable housing projects across Bellevue.

Policy Changes to Encourage Diverse Housing

To further promote housing diversity, the City Council has updated zoning regulations to allow for ‘middle housing’—such as duplexes, cottage courts, and small apartment buildings—in neighborhoods that previously only permitted single-family homes. This change aligns with new state laws and aims to address the region’s housing shortage by increasing housing options within the city.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

The city is committed to engaging with residents to ensure that these developments meet community needs and maintain Bellevue’s character. Public meetings and forums are being organized to gather input and keep the community informed about ongoing and upcoming projects. Residents are encouraged to participate in these discussions to help shape the future of housing in Bellevue.

Through these concerted efforts, Bellevue is demonstrating a strong commitment to creating a more inclusive and affordable community for all its residents.
