Bellevue’s Commitment to Sustainability: A Community Effort

Bellevue has long been recognized for its lush greenery and commitment to environmental stewardship. As we look ahead, the city continues to prioritize sustainability through comprehensive planning and community engagement.

2026-2030 Sustainable Bellevue Plan

In November 2025, the City Council adopted the 2026-2030 Sustainable Bellevue Plan, a strategic roadmap guiding Bellevue’s goals and actions in environmental sustainability. This plan sets forth ambitious targets, including reducing communitywide greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The plan focuses on key areas such as climate change, energy usage, materials and waste management, mobility and land use, and natural systems.

Progress in Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions

Recent data indicates that Bellevue’s greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 4.6% from 2023 to 2024. This reduction is attributed to lower overall energy use, a decrease in fuel-intensive transportation, and an increase in cleaner grid electricity due to Puget Sound Energy’s growing reliance on renewable energy. Since 2011, municipal emissions from city operations have dropped by 52%.

Tree Canopy Assessment

The city’s commitment to preserving its natural environment is evident in its tree canopy assessments. As of 2023, Bellevue’s tree canopy covered 39% of the city, nearly meeting the citywide goal of 40%. While there was a slight decrease from 39.6% to 39.3% between 2021 and 2023, efforts are ongoing to enhance and protect this vital resource.

Community Engagement and Initiatives

Community involvement plays a crucial role in Bellevue’s sustainability efforts. The city hosts regular town hall meetings to engage residents in discussions about environmental initiatives and to gather input on future projects. Programs like the Clean Buildings Incentive Program and Energy Smart Eastside support residents and businesses in adopting energy-efficient practices and technologies.

Looking Ahead

Bellevue’s dedication to sustainability is a collective effort that requires the participation of all community members. By staying informed and involved, residents can contribute to the city’s vision of a healthy, resilient, and thriving community for generations to come.
