Bellevue continues to make significant strides in its commitment to environmental sustainability. The City Council recently adopted the 2026-2030 Sustainable Bellevue Plan, marking the second major update since the original plan’s adoption in 2021. This comprehensive strategy aims to guide the city toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
The updated plan focuses on five key areas: climate change, energy and buildings, mobility and land use, waste, and natural systems. Notable initiatives include expanding the Energy Smart Eastside program, promoting building decarbonization, and further electrifying the city’s vehicle fleet. These actions are designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance climate resilience throughout the community and city operations.
In line with these efforts, Bellevue reported a 4.6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions between 2023 and 2024. This decline is attributed to decreased overall energy use, a drop in fuel-intensive transportation, and a cleaner electricity supply. The city’s Environmental Performance Dashboard, which tracks progress under the Sustainable Bellevue Plan, highlights these achievements alongside other sustainability measures.
As Bellevue continues to grow, these initiatives demonstrate the city’s dedication to balancing development with environmental stewardship, ensuring a sustainable future for all residents.
