Bellevue’s Evolving Landscape: Housing, Safety, and Community Well-being

Bellevue is actively implementing initiatives to enhance housing diversity, public safety, and community services, reflecting its commitment to residents’ well-being.

Expanding Housing Options

In response to state mandates, the Bellevue City Council has updated zoning regulations to allow ‘middle housing’—including duplexes and cottage courts—in areas previously designated for single-family homes. This change aims to address the housing shortage and provide more affordable living options. While the final plan is more conservative than initially proposed, it marks a significant step toward increasing housing diversity in the city.

Enhancing Public Safety

To improve road safety, the council approved the ‘Safe Speeds Bellevue’ program, reducing speed limits on 84% of arterial roads. Notably, corridors like Bel-Red Road and NE 20th Street will see speed limits drop from 35 mph to 25 mph. This initiative seeks to decrease high-speed incidents and enhance safety for all road users.

Addressing Community Needs

Recognizing the growing demand for human services, the city has allocated approximately $6.5 million annually for the 2027-2028 period. This funding will support various programs, including housing stability and behavioral health services, ensuring that vulnerable residents receive necessary assistance.

These initiatives underscore Bellevue’s proactive approach to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive community for all its residents.
