High School & Pro Sports: Key Teams Powering Our Community

Amelia Wright reporting on sports in Bellevue and beyond—where pride, youth, and pro power blend into the fabric of community life.

Pro Teams That Drive Statewide Passion

Washington is home to four major professional teams, all based in Seattle. The Seahawks represent us in the NFL; the Mariners compete in MLB; the Sounders FC play in Major League Soccer; and the Kraken make their mark in the NHL. These franchises don’t just play games—they anchor the sports culture here, and their seasons often set the tone for sports conversations from Everett to Tacoma and in Bellevue.

Collegiate Athletics: Where Local Heroes Shine

Our state hosts several NCAA Division I programs. The University of Washington Huskies lead with 22 varsity teams spanning men’s and women’s sports including football, basketball, rowing, and soccer. Washington State University in Pullman adds depth with its Pac-12 matchups, especially in football and basketball. Gonzaga (Spokane), Seattle University, and Eastern Washington University round out our state’s Division I scene, offering opportunities for student-athletes and fans alike. These schools help bridge local high school stars to bigger stages.

Bellevue High School: A Local Powerhouse

Bellevue High School continues to stand out across sports. It offers around 20 varsity teams with many others to engage students in athletics and school spirit. The girls’ soccer team has claimed multiple KingCo league titles, and state appearances illustrate consistent strength. Bellevue’s swim & dive, cross-country, track, and water polo programs also earn recognition through state titles and strong performances in regional competition.

How It All Comes Together in Bellevue Schools

Bellevue School District schools like Bellevue High, Interlake, Newport, and Sammamish offer a wide range of athletic options. From typical fall sports like football, cross country, and girls’ soccer, to winter and spring sports, students have opportunities throughout the year. Some sports are “cut” (competitive tryouts required), others are open to all interested students.

Why Local Sports Matter to All of Us

Sporting events—whether Seahawks games or Bellevue High soccer matches—serve as gathering moments, connectors across generations. As community investment increases, so do chances for youth to find mentorship, discipline, and lasting friendships. Pro teams bring visibility and economic impact, while schools nurture local identity and promise.

So whether you’re cheering at Husky Stadium, or watching a Bellevue Wolverine swim meet, know that each game is more than a contest—it’s part of our shared story.
